How to Prepare for Your Emerald Coast Road Trip

shutterstock_1057288520You’ve finally booked your summer vacation, and now it’s time to start planning for the road trip that will get your there! Here are a few things to consider when preparing for your trek to the Emerald Coast.

Pack the essentials!
It may seem like a hassle to stock up and load everything in the car, but you will be glad you did! We suggest bringing snacks, sunscreen, towels, beach chairs, etc. with you on your beach vacation. This will not only save you time and money while you’re on vacation, but you can also skip a trip to the crowded stores. Remember: You’re little ones will need to be entertained on the beach. Pack shovels, sand buckets and other beach toys to avoid paying premium prices once you arrive.

Timing is everything!
If possible, travel during off days/times to avoid the inevitable beach traffic. Major highways in Destin and surrounding cities can become jam packed during the busy season. If you do get stuck in traffic, be patient! Saturdays are a very popular day for vacationers to arrive. If possible, arrive early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the influx of people visiting to the Emerald Coast. Remember: Locals still have to head to work, so avoid traveling in the mornings and afternoons on weekdays as well to bypass traffic.

Make a plan!
Allow and plan for breaks in your travel time. Making these decisions ahead of time will help for a smoother journey to your destination. For example, decide before you leave home if you are going to pack a lunch or make a pit stop. A family road trip should always allow for flexibility, but making a plan ahead of time will reduce stress and help you make it to your destination quickly and safely. Remember: Depending on how you are getting to the Emerald Coast, it’s very likely you will travel on a toll road. Don’t forget to bring cash for the tolls!
