Tips on How To Take the Perfect Beach Photo

In the age of Instagram and Facebook, being able to take a quality beach photo is a valuable skill. Whether it’s capturing the kids playing in the sand or snagging a cute waterside pic of yourself, we are here to help you make the most of your beach photos. Below are seven sure ways to take the perfect beach photo! 

1. Be mindful of the time of day. Sunrises and sunsets are usually best since they provide great color to your pictures. Cloudy days make great days for photoshoots since the light is softer. No matter what, avoid the middle of the day, when the sun is the highest and strongest. Also, keep in mind that the water will reflect light.  

2. Look for creative locations. The beach can create some great photos, but watch out for trails, jetties, beach houses, lifeguard stands, etc. These can create some memorable and unique photos. The Emerald Coast has amazing emerald waters and white sandy dunes. The Navarre Pier and Okaloosa Island Pier would also be great, creative locations for some shots.  

3. Composition is key. Include a focal point in your photo to draw attention. Look for reflections in the water to reflect your subject. Use lines to your advantage. Be mindful to keep the horizon level (this will greatly enhance your photo) and play with the curve of the beach and sand. Also, follow the rule of thirds. 4. If you’re trying to capture waves or children playing, take advantage of burst mode. This simple feature, found on most phones and cameras, is an easy and efficient way to get some great candids.  

5. During sunset or sunrise, silhouettes can create an amazing, artistic effect. Make your subject darker and focus on the amazing colors in the sky (on iPhone you do this by tapping on the sunset).  

6. Edit it! There are numerous apps, softwares, and social media features that allow you to quickly edit photos to make them look almost professional. Play with saturation, contrast, highlights, shadows, and sharpening to enhance your photos.  

7. Be you! The best part of taking pictures on vacation is being able to showcase personality. Capture the fun, carefree mood of a beach vacation that is authentic to yourself. This is truly the best trick for great photos.  

You don’t need to rely on an expensive Canon or Nikon (although those are great) to take amazing photos. Your smartphone will take great photos if you know the right tricks. Follow our tips and play around with them on your vacation to find that perfect beach pic!
