Winter Fishing Tips

Although it isn’t peak season on the Emerald Coast, you can still take advantage of Destin’s fishing options during a winter beach vacation. Here are a few tips we suggest for those looking to explore the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village on your winter getaway.

Bring layers
The weather in the wintertime is extremely unpredictable. While it may be cold when you are riding a boat to your fishing destination, if you are out on a sunny day, it’s very likely you’ll warm up during your time on the water. Be prepared with jackets, but also pack lighter clothing in case the weather is much warmer than you’d expect on a winter fishing excursion.

Choose the right bait
We all know certain bait works better than others for certain fish, certain water types, etc., but the temperature of the water also affects the type of bait you should use. Decide what fish you want to catch on your trip, and research the best bait to catch that particular type of fish before you get out on the water.

Watch the weather
Check the forecast before launching your boat! Florida weather can be unpredictable, so we suggest going fishing on the warmest day of your winter vacation that has no rain in the forecast.

Fish inshore
We know you may have vacationed to Destin to explore the Gulf waters, but we encourage you to check out the area’s other waterways while you are in town as well. Inshore waters, such as local rivers and the Choctawhatchee Bay are usually calmer than offshore. Because of this, you’re more likely to find active fish in the inshore waters.
