Tips for Staying Cool on the Beach

waterIt’s no secret that Florida’s Emerald Coast is hot! Summers on the beach can be brutal, but we are giving you some tips from locals on how to beat the heat on your next beach vacation.

Water, Water, Water!
Because there tends to be a cool breeze coming off of the Gulf of Mexico, beachgoers can sometimes not realize how hot it really is outside. We highly recommend bringing plenty of water in an ice chest to the beach. Be sure to constantly drink water throughout the day to ensure you are hydrated while you spend the day in the sun.

Bring an Umbrella!
Time in the shade is always helpful when trying to cool off while the sun is beating down. If you don’t have the room to pack an umbrella with you, visit one of the multiple vendor locations along the beach where you can rent a beach umbrella. If you are with a group of people, we suggest bringing a canopy tent for everyone to sit under. Make note that these tents are only allowed on certain beaches throughout the region.

Pack These Items in Your Beach Bag!
There is only so much room in a beach bag, so we want to help you pack smarter. Aside from the usual beach essentials like towels, beach toys and sunscreen, we suggest packing cooling items such as a spray bottle, cooling towels and a hat.

Lather the Sunscreen!
While sunscreen may not necessarily help you stay cool, it will definitely help you from burning.  If you get a sunburn one of your first days of vacation, the following days out in the sun will be miserable. Be sure to apply sunscreen often to ensure that your future days in the sand will be sunburn-free.

Take a Break!
We know you vacationed to the beautiful Emerald Coast to enjoy the emerald green waters and white sand beaches, but we suggest taking a break from the heat. This could mean heading back to your condo in the afternoon or taking a day off from the heat by checking out what else the area has to offer. For example, you can head to the Destin Commons for a day full of shopping or visit Destin’s premier indoor climbing facility Rock Out Climbing Gym

Get in the Water!
You have a huge cooling agent just feet away from you as you relax on the Destin beaches. If you need to cool off, take a splash in the water.
